DIRECTOR: JOHN FORD

CAST: WOODY STRODE, CONSTANCE TOWERS, JEFFREY HUNTER, BILLIE BURKE

The titular “Buffalo Soldier” officer, played by Ford regular Woody Strode, stands accused of a rape and murder, and quickly discovers that his history of heroic service is no defense from white man’s avenging “justice.” An elegant flashback structure unveils Rutledge’s story in this, the finest single film showcase for Strode, one of the few actors the cantankerous Ford was known to speak to with fondness.
