Jeanne Moreau’s sharp-witted housemaid departs 1930s Paris for employment in the sticks, where she finds lecherous men, a murder mystery, and the ominous drumbeat of far-right nationalism. In his first collaboration with screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière, Buñuel creates an amusingly amoral world, rife with perverse touches: a shotgun trained upon a butterfly; sex advice from a priest (“There are caresses…and caresses”); and more than a sprinkling of foot fetishism.
