“I’m sorry, Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.” The calm, pre-programmed voice of ship computer HAL 9000 (each of the three letters one removed from IBM in the alphabet) disobeying a direct order is perhaps the most indelible moment of AI insurrection in all of cinema, and that’s just one aspect of Kubrick’s mind-bending, epoch-hopping opus, a shuttle from pre- to post-history that has few equals for sheer philosophical and cinematic ambition, not to speak of elegant machine-tooled style.
