Play It As It Lays
DIRECTOR: FRANK PERRY
CAST: TUESDAY WELD, ANTHONY PERKINS, TAMMY GRIMES
Perry was a key figure at Universal in the ‘70s, and this film, along with his Diary of A Mad Housewife (Part Two, coming soon), was the apotheosis of the nervous breakdown subgenre. Adapted from Joan Didion’s novel in suitably spare, skeletal style, and starring Tuesday Weld as Maria Wyeth, an actress in a tailspin after separating from her director husband (Adam Roarke, evoking Peter Bogdanovich), who finds solace in long aimless freeway rides in her yellow Corvette.
