A weekend retreat at a marquis’ country château sets the stage for this masterpiece. Considered one of the greatest of all films by universal decree, it’s the very apex of the delicate, humane art of Renoir, who also features in the ensemble cast, observing: “The awful thing about life is this: everyone has their reasons.”

Pascal Merigeau is an acclaimed journalist and film critic. He’s published multiple books in his native home of France, including definitive biographies of Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Maurice Pialat.

Peter Bogdanovich, filmmaker, writer and historian, has directed numerous classics including The Last Picture Show, What’s Up Doc?, Paper Moon and the documentary Directed by John Ford. His writings are collected in the indispensable Who the Devil Made It: Conversations with Legendary Filmmakers.
