Empire of the Sun
DIRECTOR: STEVEN SPIELBERG
CAST: CHRISTIAN BALE, JOHN MALKOVICH, MIRANDA RICHARDSON
The events of World War II, which ended the year before his birth, have exercised an enormous influence on Spielberg throughout his career. He turned to the Pacific theater with this ravishing adaptation of J.G. Ballard's semi-autobiographical account of life among Western expats in a Japanese internment camp in China, starring a preternaturally talented thirteen-year-old Christian Bale.
Molly Haskell, author of the recent Steven Spielberg: A Life in Films, will introduce the film, with a book signing to follow.
