A Q&A with Whit Stillman will follow the screening.
One of the most iconic New York independent films of the 90s, Metropolitan is an irresistible comedy of manners and a tour through an Upper East Side once decorated with teenage patrician debutantes and dandies. When a bright-eyed middle class Princetonian encounters a group self-dubbed the “Urban Haute Bourgeoisie,” new affections and rivalries are forged, and the newcomer is introduced to their manipulations, cruelties, and endless over-intellectualization of emotions. Nominated for Best Original Screenplay, it is the first installment in writer-director Whit Stillman’s trilogy of sophisticated satires detailing the lives of beautiful, young, affluent city dwellers, followed by Barcelona and The Last Days of Disco.
