A romantic historical epic that spans half a century, Red Dust follows the travails of Shen Shao-Hua (Brigitte Lin), a writer who takes refuge in her imagination through the Sino-Japanese War and following turmoil whose story is loosely based on that of Shanghainese author Eileen Chang. Garnering comparisons to Dr. Zhivago in its sweep and striking a chord when released shortly after the ’89 Tienanmen Square massacre, Red Dust cleaned up at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards, including recognition for Maggie Cheung, luminous as Shen’s steadfast best friend.
