The life’s work of Mohsen Makhmalbaf is reconciling seemingly contrary documentary and fiction impulses, and in A Moment of Innocence, the apotheosis of his art, he draws from a deeply personal recollection. In 1974, before the revolution, Makhmalbaf, age 17, stabbed a young policeman. More than two decades later, he and the policeman, Mirhadi Taiebi, reunite in a very different Iran and collaborate to make a fiction film of the incident.

A Moment of Innocence is screening as part of Metrograph A to Z, a collection of films we think everybody should see.
