Boys Don't Cry
DIRECTOR: KIMBERLY PEIRCE
CAST: HILARY SWANK, CHLOë SEVIGNY, PETER SARSGAARD
Hilary Swank left an indelible impression on audiences with her second-skin portrayal of Brandon Teena, a trans man born Teena Brandon, who was raped and murdered in Humboldt, Nebraska in 1993. Swank’s Teena is a tough and tender stranger who ambles into town and romances local gal Lana (Chloë Sevigny, whose karaoke of “The Bluest Eyes in Texas” is a highlight.) The inevitable tragedy stings, of course, but director Kimberly Pierce is just as interested in the transports of young love. Another significant step in the mainstreaming of queer stories, landing Swank a Best Actress Oscar.
