Too Late the Hero
DIRECTOR: ROBERT ALDRICH
CAST: MICHAEL CAINE, CLIFF ROBERTSON
On an island in the Pacific in the early days of World War II, Cliff Robertson and Michael Caine, a US translator and a Cockney medic, are attached to an almostcertain-death commando raid on a Japanese communications post. As Aldrich did so often, he transposes his outrage over contemporary American policies onto another era. The film moves inexorably towards one of the director’s beloved mettle-testing showdowns—macho bluff over life and death odds in a high-stakes game of chance.
