The Legend of Lylah Clare
DIRECTOR: ROBERT ALDRICH
CAST: PETER FINCH, KIM NOVAK, ERNEST BORGNINE
A film director who’s a spiritual casualty of his own success (Peter Finch) is hired to helm a tawdry biopic of his recently-deceased ex-wife, starring a newcomer who’s her dead ringer (Kim Novak, not coincidentally recalling Vertigo). A sometimes-surreal tightrope tiptoe between performance and life along the lines of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? and the same year’s The Killing of Sister George, continuing Aldrich’s fascination with scavenging the entertainment industry’s human wreckage.
THE GREATEST MOTHER OF ALL
1969 / 35mm / 20 mins
In an attempt to fundraise for a feature, Aldrich made this short starring Peter Finch as a down-on-his-luck filmmaker.
