DIRECTOR: JACQUES DEMY
CAST: ANOUK AIMéE, GARY LOCKWOOD
After The Umbrellas of Cherbourg became an international phenomenon, Jacques Demy moved to Los
Angeles (with wife Agnes Varda, who made a series of SoCal gems) and made his English-language debut, a semi-sequel to 1960’s Lola. Anouk Aimée is living on the skids, conducting a fling with Gary Lockwood, an aimless young American facing bankruptcy, an unhappy marriage, and the draft. An outsider’s distillation of counterculture spirit (of a pair with Antonioni’s Zabriskie Point), Demy’s made little impact when released, but continues to find a growing group of admirers decades later.
