Joe Dante’s affectionate ode to B monster movies of the fifties and sixties stars a boisterous John Goodman as a wannabe theater impresario modeled on William Castle. He’s trying every trick in the book (buzzers on the seats, dry ice in the aisles) to promote his new sci-fi shocker Mant (“Half Man, Half Ant, All Terror!”), but the real-world reality of the Cuban missile crisis keep intruding. The Gremlins director’s good-natured comedy features impeccable period detail and is infused with a genuine movie love.
