Screened in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, the sinister, noir-ish post-#MeToo thriller Nina Wu explores the bartering of sex and power in the film industry. Wu Ke-xi plays Nina, a hard-working Taipei actress with aspirations to stardom. When Nina lands the lead in an erotically charged 1960s-set espionage thriller, her dreams appear close to fulfillment, but a trying shoot and crises with her family undermine her triumph. She finds herself pursued by terrifying visions of a mysterious young woman on her trail, as well as unwelcome, suppressed memories. Wu, who turns in a vulnerable, bravura performance, drew on her own experiences as an actress in co-writing the screenplay, a labyrinth of twists that keeps you guessing all the way to the center.
