DIRECTOR: HOWARD HAWKS

CAST: HUMPHREY BOGART, LAUREN BACALL, WALTER BRENNAN

Lauren Bacall made her screen debut in Hawks’s loose adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel, which moved the setting for its affair to remember from Cuba to the French colony of Martinique shortly after the fall of France in summer of 1940. Bacall plays a lounge singer opposite leading man Humphrey Bogart, a politically neutral expat American coaxed into transporting a Free French Resistance leader when his sport-fishing business goes slack. The chemistry of the couple show is off the charts—it should come as no surprise that they were married soon after sparks flew on the shoot.
