DIRECTOR: HAILE GERIMA
CAST: BARBARAO, JOHNNY WEATHERS, CORA LEE DAY
Ethiopian-born Gerima distilled his experience of American racism in this stirring film, his UCLA thesis project and one of the landmark works of the L.A. Rebellion, which depicts the empowering political awakening of a single mother in Watts (Barbara O. Jones, commanding) who’s struggling to survive on welfare. Gerima tells her story through a bracing mixture of fiction and documentary elements, including the actual footage of Gerima and crew being questioned by the LAPD during their shoot.
