How do we experience war from the privileged, no-risk position of far, far away? Ruminating on the bounty of images produced by the actual Vietnam War and the imagined “Vietnam” of student movements in the west, Farocki wrestles with this issue, among many others, in his coruscating film, which ties together a depiction of a relationship on the skids, a perusal of newspaper photographs from the front, and reenactments of key military conflicts by German actors and Vietnamese children. Relentlessly analytical and self-critical, filled with bold associative leaps, interrogating the idea of the documentary image: as intel, as narrative tool, as collective memory.
