The New World
DIRECTOR: TERRENCE MALICK
CAST: Q'ORIANKA KILCHER, COLIN FARRELL, CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER, CHRISTIAN BALE
The romance between John Smith and Pocahontas at Jamestown in the early years of the colonies is a shopworn American legend, but as filmed by Malick seems to be occurring for the very first time, in a film marked throughout by a sense of awed discovery. Newcomer Q’orianka Kilcher, in a revelatory performance, plays Pocahontas opposite Colin Farrell’s Smith, and her free-flowing physicality is followed by the reeling and gamboling camera of DP Emmanuel Lubezki, who here commences a vital collaboration with Malick. A radical reinterpretation of the foundational myth of America, filled with passages of reverie and rhapsody and haunted by a sense of Paradise Lost.
