Though it is sometimes suggested that Chilly Scenes of Winter is an influence on Kicking and Screaming, Baumbach first saw Silver’s great film later, but immediately recognized a kinship. The late John Heard has one of his defining roles in this low-key lovelorn comedy by Silver, adapted from Ann Beattie’s debut novel. Heard plays a Salt Lake City civil servant who’s hopelessly hung up on ex-girlfriend Mary Beth Hurt; as in Baumbach’s Kicking and Screaming, their happier days together are seen through flashback. Caustically funny and supremely sad, the film features onetime noir siren Gloria Grahame, in her last performance, as Heard’s needy, despairing mother, a harbinger of what his future might hold if he can’t get it together.
