DIRECTOR: JEAN VIGO

CAST: DITA PARLO, JEAN DASTé

Vigo made only one feature film before dying at age 29 from tuberculosis, and it forever placed him among the heroic saints of cinema history. The tale of a country girl (Dita Parlo) and her unglamorous induction into married life with the captain of a river barge, L’Atalante is a film which, in its mixture of the lyrical, the erotic, and the earthily everyday, helped to outline the undefinable style of “French poetic realism.” With Michel Simon as the ship’s first mate, and a supporting cast of numberless half-feral felines.
