DIRECTOR: VINCENTE MINNELLI
CAST: RICHARD WIDMARK, GLORIA GRAHAME , LAUREN BACALL, CHARLES BOYER
Psychiatrist Dr. McIver (Richard Widmark) has his work cut out for him overseeing an upscale clinic for the mentally disturbed, but he has to work double-overtime to keep his staff in line, especially with lothario colleague Charles Boyer on the prowl and bedlam breaking out when his wife (Gloria Grahame) orders new drapes for the common room. (As always in Minnelli, décor is a matter of life-and-death import.) Simmering neuroses build to a boil among a high strung ensemble that includes Lauren Bacall, Oscar Levant, and Lillian Gish, while Minnelli—in his first film in CinemaScope and color—performs an expert narrative juggling act, his hothouse hospital coming to seem a microcosm of a well-off Eisenhower era America on the verge of cracking up.
