Bells are Ringing
DIRECTOR: VINCENTE MINNELLI
CAST: JUDY HOLLIDAY, DEAN MARTIN, FRED CLARK
The final musical production to come from MGM’s storied Freed Unit, with which Minnelli had worked to revolutionize the genre through twelve films, takes things out on a high note with a sparkling script courtesy Betty Comden and Adolphe Green, which finds nosey New York City answering service operator Judy Holliday meddling in the business of her customers, along the way becoming enamored of hunky playwright Dean Martin, who’s formed the impression that she’s a matronly old biddy. Includes tunes “The Party’s Over” and “Just in Time,” later to become popular standards, and Holliday’s last screen performance.
