DIRECTOR: MIKIO NARUSE

CAST: MACHIKO KYô, MASAYUKI MORI, YOSHIKO KUGA, EIJI FUNAKOSHI

When Mon (Kyō) returns to her home village from Tokyo pregnant and unmarried, the resulting scandal threatens the marriage prospects of her bookish little sister (Yoshiko Kuga) and the survival of her already down-on-their-luck family, prompting her brooding brother (Ugetsu’s Masayuki Mori) to drive her back to the city and a life of sex work. Of Naruse’s unparalleled run of 1950s dramas, perhaps the most unsparing in its emotional violence, with Kyō exploring the very depths of desolation.
