The Last Cigarette
DIRECTOR: KEVIN RAFFERTY AND FRANK KERAUDREN
Introduced by Kevin Rafferty and Frank Keraudren
Returning to the collage film terrain of Atomic Café, Rafferty and Keraudren use vintage commercials, anti-smoking spots, courtroom footage, and other astonishing excavated material to give a guided tour of the history of tobacco in modern America—the story of a purportedly perfectly harmless product as it was sold to the public, and the battle that erupted once the truth began to be better known. Ingeniously tied together by C-SPAN broadcast footage of the 1994 U.S. Congressional hearings which cross-examined the CEOs of the seven major tobacco companies, seen squirming away from anything resembling a straight answer.
