Shot in silent black-and-white in the summer of 1964, Warhol’s motion portrait depicts the Belgian-born American curator and art historian puffing on a stogie while growing increasingly agitated under the scrutiny of the camera eye. Warhol, who once said of Geldzahler that “Henry gave me all of my ideas,” was one artist who owed an enormous debt of gratitude to Geldzahler; Hockney was another, who honored the controversial Museum of Modern Art curator by immortalizing him in a double portrait with partner Christopher Scott.
