The Strange One
DIRECTOR: JACK GARFEIN
CAST: BEN GAZZARA, PAT HINGLE, PETER MARK RICHMAN, ARTHUR STORCH
Screening introduced by Barry Gifford
Garfein, a crucial figure in the development of the Actors’ Studio, made his provocative film debut with this study in everyday despotism within the confines of a southern military college, which marked the film debut of Ben Gazzara. Reprising a role he’d originated in Calder Willingham’s stage play End as a Man, Gazzara plays Jocko De Paris, a petty potentate dominating his dormitory in a film that’s startlingly ahead-of-its-time in its frankness regarding the homoerotic socializing in such all-male enclaves, and a brilliant character study of a sadistic sociopath and all-American fascist.
Screening as part of Barry Gifford's Dream Double Feature.
