DIRECTOR: JIM JARMUSCH

Iggy Pop has more than once been a supporting star for Jarmusch (Dead Man, Coffee and Cigarettes), but he’s nearly the whole show in this roaring rock doc, which uses original and archival footage alongside cutout style animation to tell the tale of the mightiest proto-punk group of them all, The Stooges, from their formation in Ann Arbor, Michigan, through their short crash-and-burn stardom, and into a late-career reunion. Jarmusch teases out the band’s history, and the essential contradiction of Pop’s personality: the apparent “primitive” who can so eloquently explain his every inspiration.
