DIRECTOR: KON ICHIKAWA

CAST: YUJIRO ISHIHARA

Adapting yachtsman Kenichi Horie’s book of the same title, a nonfiction account of the first successful Transpacific solo sea voyage from Nishinomiya, Japan to San Francisco, California, Ichikawa and cinematographer Yoshihiro Yamazaki craft a consuming man-against-nature saga in stunning Eastmancolor. As the Horie stand-in, Yujiro Ishihara embodies a willful character in keeping with the rebellious youths that abounded in Nikkatsu studios’ 1960s productions, driven to the sea in defiance of the rigid social expectations of the time, the flashbacks to his life on land making us privy to the hefty psychological cargo that Ishihara’s character has taken aboard his flimsy vessel.
