Loosely based on Jorge Amado’s novel, Tent of Miracles (Tenda dos Milagres) chronicles the “re-discovery” of a mixed-race social scientist, Pedro Arcanjo, whose claims of the multi-racial character of Brazil were vehemently denounced when first expressed in the 1920s. Deftly weaving Arcanjo’s story with the contemporary tumult caused by his celebration by foreigner intellectuals, Tent of Miracles is a fascinating meditation on Brazil’s confrontation with race, its progress, and how much still needs to be done.
