Rio, Zona Norte
DIRECTOR: NELSON PEREIRA DOS SANTOS
The critical success (and accompanying scandal) of Rio 40° gave dos Santos much greater access to talent and resources for Rio, Zona Norte. Securing the talents of the Afro-Brazilian actor and popular cabaret star Grande Otelo as well as singer Angela Maria, dos Santos fashioned a cautionary tale about the exploitation of popular culture. Espiritu (Otelo) is a favela-based composer eking out a tough existence when his music is suddenly discovered by the music industry, which quickly finds ways to cheat him out of credit and royalties for his increasingly popular songs.
