No Fear, No Die
DIRECTOR: CLAIRE DENIS
CAST: ISAACH DE BANKOLé, ALEX DESCAS, JEAN CLAUDE BRIALY
Screening introduced by Claire Denis
For her second film, Denis offered viewers a bracing, rough-hewn vision of life on the fringes, following two Black immigrants, played by two of their generation’s premiere Francophone actors, Isaach De Bankolé and Alex Descas, as they eke out an existence on the Paris outskirts by participating in the illegal sport of cockfighting, delivering their birds up to face ritual slaughter with a terrible tenderness. The brooding, largely nocturnal live-by-night atmosphere is enhanced by Abdullah Ibrahim’s restless score, while the presence of Jean Claude Brialy provides a tactile link to the ‘60s New Wave, whose documentary impulse Denis keeps alive and well.
