L'Appollonide (House of Tolerance)
DIRECTOR: BERTRAND BONELLO
CAST: NOéMIE LVOVSKY, HAFSIA HERZI, CéLINE SALLETTE , JASMINE TRINCA, ADèLE HAENEL
A delirious, druggy, intoxicating, and flagrantly anachronistic imagination of goings-on in a Parisian brothel, L’Apollonide, at the turn of the last century, entering a cloistered culture once rigidly corseted and deliciously languorous. The setting is a custom fit for writer/director Bonello, with his career-long examination of the sublime surfaces and spiritual price tags of consumer society (see his 2016 Nocturama), while in style he experiments with the interrelation of screen grammar and pop music structure, accompanying a funeral to the strains of “Nights and White Satin.” Perverse, inimitable, and loaded with unforgettable images, not least those tracing the tracks of milky white tears.
Screening in the series Late Nites at Metrograph.
