DIRECTOR: MASAHIRO SHINODA
CAST: KICHIEMON NAKAMURA, SHIMA IWASHITA
Classical Japanese theatre meets the cutting edge of the avant-garde in Masahiro Shinoda’s monumental New Wave opus, a Brechtian adaptation of Monzaemon Chikamatsu’s 1720 century bunraku puppet play, made under the auspices of the experimental Art Theatre Guild. Art director Kiyoshi Awazu created the radically stylized sets, while Toru Takemitsu provided the jarring score and co-wrote the screenplay, the tale of a star-crossed romance between an Osaka merchant and a beautiful courtesan, which makes for an enthralling study in diseased eros.
