Bay Area recording and performance group Negativland got themselves in deep trouble by having too
much fun, laying smuggled audio of Casey Kasem cursing a blue streak over a sampled U2 song for a 1991 single on the SST label. Baldwin’s fragmented, gleefully anarchic documentary Sonic Outlaws documents the legal nightmare that ensued from Negativland crossing Bono, while, as the sympatico work of another cut-and- paste creator, exemplifying, expanding on, and interrogating the ideas behind the culture-jamming guerilla tactics of Negativland’s appropriation art.
