1932 / 80min / 35mm

DIRECTOR: GEORGE CUKOR & LOUIS J. GASNIER

CAST: KAY FRANCIS, WALTER HUSTON, KENNETH MACKENNA

A stage play by the Hungarian writer Lajos Zilahy here gets a romantic Russian setting, and allows Francis a wrenching role as a wife who, amidst the turmoil of the First World War, offers herself up to a general (Walter Huston) in order to save her husband (Kenneth MacKenna) from death by firing squad, only to fall head over heels for the officer. Angsty and unmistakably adult drama, of a sort that Hollywood would abandon in the years after the Production Code kicked into effect.

Screening as a part of Kay Francis: The Queen of Pleasure.
