Heaven Can Wait
DIRECTOR: ERNST LUBITSCH
CAST: GENE TIERNEY, DON AMECHE
Warm, wise, and wickedly funny, Lubitsch’s Technicolor comedy begins at the end, with lifelong ladies’ man Don Ameche at the threshold of Hell, making an account of himself to Satan. What he narrates is a naughty life lived with a wandering eye—but also with a strange sort of fidelity, evinced in his 25-year marriage to wife Martha (Gene Tierney), daughter of crass Midwestern meat-packing millionaires. A great late work from the wry, worldly master, in which Lubitsch invokes a supremely civilized fin de siècle New York with alluring nostalgia.
