Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki

2016 / 70min / DCP

Film director and animator Hayao Miyazaki shocked the world when, in 2013, he announced his retirement at the age of 72, a perfectionist still at the top of his creative game in the opinion of just about everyone but himself. But then something happened: meeting with young computer graphics artists, the most famous living proponent of hand-drawn animation suddenly got an itch to try his hand at something new, a short film project making use of CGI. Shot over the course of two years, the documentary Never-Ending Man observes the old master in the process of learning new tricks, facing the threat of his project’s cancellation and his own self-doubt, in this invaluable look at the creative process of a genius who has never ceased to push himself.

A GKIDS release.
