Brooks’ feature debut is a prescient mockumentary parodying the premise of PBS’s groundbreaking proto-reality TV documentary An American Family, and in the process of doing so it predicts the present industry of manufactured reality and the performance of self. A seemingly typical family unit, headed by patriarch Charles Grodin (never better), invite Brooks’s preening, egotistical filmmaker into their suburban home, and with him a circus that threatens to upend their quiet lives, with every scene a marvel of comic invention building to mounting madness.
