Nostalgia for the Light
DIRECTOR: PATRICIO GUZMáN
A film that reframes Guzmán’s ongoing project of historical documentation in a cosmic context, Nostalgia for the Light sets its scene in South America’s Atacama Desert, a hub for astronomers, and site of graves belonging to both pre-Columbian mummies and “disappeared” political prisoners kidnapped by the Chilean army under Augusto Pinochet. Moving from the sorrowful soil below where survivors still look for lost loved ones to the stars above, this is perhaps the director’s most philosophical work.
Screening in the series Icarus Films at 40.
