Ophüls and Godard: The Meeting in St. Gervais

2010 / 44min / DCP

DIRECTOR: FREDERIC CHOFFAT & VINCENT LOWY

Marcel Ophüls is the director of The Sorrow and the Pity, one of the essential filmed documents of the Holocaust. Jean-Luc Godard is, well, Jean-Luc Godard—a filmmaker singularly concerned with the tragedy of postwar Europe. In 2009 they sat together for a lively and occasionally testy conversation, discussing childhood memories, Jewish identity, la politique des auteurs, and a since-discarded idea to work together on a film. Years later, though, they did complete this conversational “collaboration”—revealing, sometimes hysterical, and chock-a-block with ideas.

Screening in the series Icarus Films at 40.
