An outspoken voice for Moroccan independence and a leader of the left in his native country, Mehdi Ben Baraka disappeared from Paris in October of 1965, and shortly thereafter seemed to be erased from history—an injustice which this searching biographical documentary works to redress, restoring along with Barka’s life his alternative, progressive vision for his nation. Screens with Drowning by Bullets, a heartbreaking investigation into the tragic events of October 17, 1961, when Algerian demonstrators were massacred by Parisian police.

Screening in the series Icarus Films at 40.
