APOCALYPSE THEN: The scariest film ever made in the U.S. is also the quintessential movie of the late ’60s. George Romero’s low-budget indie—part E.C. horror comics, part cinema verité made on a shoestring in rural Pennsylvania—provided a social metaphor as powerful as Invasion of the Body Snatchers furnished for the first half of the 1950s. Complementing Romero’s vision of America devouring itself, the guerrilla newsreel Amerika annotates the Eve of Destruction as anti-war teenagers and African-American militants talk tough and battle the police, at times to a rock ‘n’ roll beat.
