Among the most colorful, energetic, and downright crazy of the golden-age MGM musicals produced by the Arthur Freed Unit, Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly’s co-directorial follow-up to Singin’ in the Rain is an exuberantly funny, dance-filled comedy about three former soldiers—Kelly, Dan Dailey, and choreographer extraordinaire Michael Kidd—who reunite ten years after the war to find each other’s lives dramatically changed. Cyd Charisse kicking up her heels at a sweaty boxing gym is only topped by the three men’s jaw-dropping trashcan-lid dance, which is in turn outdone by Gene Kelly on roller skates.
