DIRECTOR: GéRARD BLAIN

CAST: YANN FAVRE, PHILIPPE MARCH, NATHALIE FONTAINE

Striving to escape his working-class upbringing and find a better life, handsome teenager Paul (Yann Favre) enters into an affair with Philippe (Philippe March), a wealthy older married man who spoils Paul while supporting his aspirations to become an actor—a comfortable arrangement threatened by Paul’s chance encounter with bewitching blonde Marie-Laure (Nathalie Fontaine) during a summer getaway in Deauville. Winner of the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival, Blain’s assured debut feature was a favorite of François Truffaut, who praised it for “its absolute correctness of tone, its warm irony, and the precision of its intention.”

Screening as a part of our Gérard Blain series.
