Eros + Massacre
DIRECTOR: YOSHISHIGE YOSHIDA
CAST: MARIKO OKADA, TOSHIYUKI HOSOKAWA
Scenes from the life of Sakae Ōsugi, a free love advocate and anarchist assassinated by Japanese military police in 1923, intertwine and seem to dialogue with a narrative in which contemporary students of the 1960s struggle with many of the same causes and conflicts to which Ōsugi dedicated his life, negotiating the perils and pleasures of new sexual liberation. Yesterday and “today” spin dizzyingly around one another in this urgent, self-reflexive epic of personal and political passions which made Yoshida’s reputation, his first film to be shown widely in the west and one of the essential texts of the Japanese New Wave.
Screening as a part of our Yoshishige Yoshida x 3 series.
