Good Will Hunting
DIRECTOR: GUS VAN SANT
CAST: MATT DAMON, ROBIN WILLIAMS, BEN AFFLECK
The 9:30pm screening on Friday, June 29 introduced by Dave Itzkoff, Culture Reporter for the New York Times and author of Robin.
Co-screenwriter Matt Damon is a blue-collar autodidact math prodigy squandering his talent as a janitor at MIT and passing his free time in his native South Boston boozing and brawling, until he meets his mental match in the person of Robin Williams’ full-contact psychologist. A box-office hit on a scale unlike anything in Van Sant’s previous career, male melodrama Good Will Hunting is nevertheless surprisingly of a piece with his earlier films in its close attention to the imprisoning pathologies of class in America, particularly as applied to working-class young men.
