“You shouldn’t hang me on a hook, Johnny. My father hung me on a hook once. Once!” An early vehicle for Michael Keaton and Saturday Night Live headliner Joe Piscopo, this eighties classic is a note-perfect parody of thirties gangster dramas, following the trajectory of Johnny Kelly from good-natured New York City newsboy to career criminal working for the mob. Like a Goodfellas parody before there was ever Goodfellas, Heckerling’s film shows her fleetness with broad, Jerry Lewis–style character comedy, including the indelible film-within-the-film “Your Testicles and You.”
