Crew reunion Q&A with Julian Goldberger, producer Michael Robinson, associate producer Martin Garner, musician and score supervisor Jonathan Goldberger, and DP Jesse Rosen, moderated by filmmaker John Zhao at the 7pm screening.
Twenty years after his film’s Toronto premiere (before going on to Sundance, New Directors/New Films and Berlin), filmmaker Goldberger comes to Metrograph to introduce Trans, his tour-de-force of adolescent ache and regionalist purgatory, one of the undersung classics of ‘90s independent cinema. Busting out of a barbaric youth detention center in sunny, sticky southwest Florida, sixteen-year-old Ryan (Ryan Daugherty) and two other inmates escape to take it on the lam. Abandoned by his mates and pursued by police, Ryan cuts a winding path through palpably perilous, unforgiving back country, setting a course for Colorado while headed for the film’s haunting conclusion, the perfect climax to a work of offhand 16mm poetry.
