The Killing

1956 / 85min / 35mm

DIRECTOR: STANLEY KUBRICK

CAST: STERLING HAYDEN, COLEEN GRAY, MARIE WINDSOR, VINCE EDWARDS

The 28-year-old Kubrick’s first film with a certifiable star—lead lug Sterling Hayden, fronting an ensemble of desperate, dangerous characters, including the wild Timothy Carey—is a late, great entry in the noir canon, with Kubrick and hard-boiled author extraordinaire Jim Thompson adapting Lionel White’s pulp novel, filtered through an ingenious, fractured flashback structure. Electric filmmaking. “You’d be killing a hores, that’s not first degree murder, in fact it’s not murder at all, in fact I don’t know what it is.”

The Killing is screening as part of the Kubrick x 8 series.
